About this calculator

The Veneer vs Laminate Calculator compares the two most-used surface finishes for Indian modular furniture — kitchens, wardrobes, TV units, doors. The 2026India range is ₹65–180 per sqft for laminate vs ₹220–950 per sqft for veneer all-in (material + adhesive + application).

Both go on the same plywood base. The choice between them isn't about durability — it's about look, repairability and resale value. Laminate beats veneer on cost and water resistance; veneer beats laminate on natural-wood feel and refinishability. This calculator gives you the 2026 numbers to decide.

Why homeowners use this calculator

  • Both materials priced on same per-sqft basis.
  • Application labour split from material cost.
  • Brand tier picker for each (Greenlam, Merino, Century, Greenply).
  • Refinish-vs-replace lifecycle cost flagged.
  • Free PDF for carpenter / kitchen vendor cross-check.

Features

  • Surface area input in sqft.
  • Material toggle (laminate / veneer).
  • Brand and grade picker.
  • Polish / lacquer add-on for veneer.
  • Premium gated PDF.

How the calculation works

For 100 sqft of kitchen shutters in 1 mm Greenlam laminate: ₹95/sqft × 100 + ₹35 application = ₹13k. Same 100 sqft in 4 mm natural teak veneer with PU polish: ₹450/sqft × 100 + ₹120 polish = ₹57k. Veneer is 4× the cost.

Why this estimate is more accurate

Designers often default to "veneer" because it sounds premium — but for kitchens, wardrobes and high-touch surfaces, laminate outperforms veneer (water resistance, scratch resistance, no maintenance). Knowing the cost gap (3–6×) gives you the conviction to push back when veneer is recommended for places it shouldn't be.

What affects the final cost

  • Thickness — 0.8 mm laminate ₹65–95/sqft, 1 mm ₹95–180/sqft (premium for shutter use).
  • Wood species (veneer) — teak ₹350–650/sqft, walnut ₹450–950/sqft, oak ₹280–550/sqft.
  • Polish on veneer — PU polish ₹85–180/sqft, melamine ₹45–95/sqft.
  • Edge banding — laminate uses 2 mm PVC edge ₹35–80/Rft; veneer needs solid wood lipping ₹120–280/Rft.
  • Refinish cost (veneer) — every 8–12 years ₹80–150/sqft to sand + re-polish.
  • Carpenter skill — veneer application needs experienced carpenter; rate 30–50% higher.

City-wise cost variations

100 sqft kitchen shutters fully finished, 2026:

  • Laminate (1 mm mid-tier): ₹13–18k
  • Membrane finish: ₹22–32k
  • Veneer (teak + melamine): ₹35–48k
  • Veneer (walnut + PU): ₹52–75k
  • Acrylic comparable: ₹38–55k

Frequently asked questions

Laminate — always. Veneer cannot tolerate the heat, steam and oil splatter of an Indian kitchen. Anyone recommending veneer for kitchen shutters is wrong; check their other recommendations carefully.

Veneer if budget allows — TV unit is low-wear and benefits from the warmth and depth of natural wood. ₹35–60k extra over laminate is justifiable for a centerpiece.

Laminate: 10–15 yrs with replacement at end. Veneer: 15–25 yrs but needs ₹80–150/sqft refinishing every 8–12 yrs. Total lifecycle cost is roughly equivalent if you refinish veneer.

Not lower quality — different category. Premium 1 mm laminate (Greenlam / Merino) outperforms cheap veneer on every functional metric except looks.

Not recommended — MDF expands with humidity and the veneer cracks at joints. Stick to BWP plywood as the base for any veneer work.
